Description
The Dragonzord – known in Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger as the "Guardian Beast Dragon Caesar" (Shugojū Dragon Caesar) – is the sixth zord of the line and belongs to Burai the DragonRanger; in Power Rangers, to the Green Ranger, Tommy. Unlike the core team's five Dino Zords, it lies dormant on the seabed off Angel Grove and isn't piloted from a cockpit but summoned with the Dragon Dagger – a dagger built as a flute whose melody calls the zord up from the waves and conducts its attacks. More often than not the Green Ranger stands outside and controls the beast remotely, making Dragon Caesar one of the series' most iconic "remote-controlled" mechas.
As a fighter, Dragon Caesar is armed to the fingertips: it fires a volley of missiles from its fingers (the original "Dragon Hurley" finger-missile attack), and its long tail ends in a spinning drill (the "Drill Spinning Caesar") that it rams into enemies. The tail can also detach, straighten out, and lock onto the lit chest plate to form the Power Staff – a hand-held weapon. All of which lets Dragon Caesar hold its own entirely on its own.
But it's also a team player: joined with parts of Daizyuzin / the Dino Megazord (Mastodon, Triceratops, Sabertooth) it becomes the Dragonzord Battle Mode – "Gouryuzin" in the original – and at its largest it falls in alongside the full Dino Megazord and Titanus to form the mighty Ultrazord. (The combination details live on the Dino Megazord entry.)
The DX (Deluxe) toy of 1992/93 is an early classic: just under 28 cm (about 11 inches) tall, with noticeable die-cast content (pleasantly heavy and substantial), a segmented tail with a spinning drill, actually-firing finger missiles, and a battery-powered chest with lights and sound; a set of swappable "relaxed" hands came in the box. Bandai first released it in Japan in 1992 as the DX Dragon Caesar (Zyuranger, with a chrome-tipped drill), then Bandai America followed in 1993 with the Deluxe Dragonzord – altered stickers, a drill tip molded in the same color as the tail instead of chrome, and a roughly 20 cm poseable Green Ranger figure with a removable Dragon Shield included. Historically it's a landmark: as the mecha of the very first "sixth ranger," Dragon Caesar/Dragonzord established the now-beloved Sixth Ranger archetype and was the first extra mecha of its kind.
