Description
This is the one that started it all: in Japan he debuted in 1992 as "Shinka Gattai Daizyuzin" in Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, and a year later he became the iconic centerpiece of the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as the Dino Megazord. Bandai's full toy name is "Shinka Gattai DX Daizyuzin" (roughly "Evolving Combination") — and that label says it all: Daizyuzin was the first Sentai mecha built entirely from mechanical beasts rather than vehicles, and in Power Rangers terms simply the very first Megazord ever. For anyone collecting the line, this is effectively where the story begins.
He's assembled from five Guardian Beasts, or Dinozords: Tyrannosaurus, ZyuMammoth (US: Mastodon), Triceratops, SaberTiger (US: Saber-Toothed Tiger) and Pteranodon (US: Pterodactyl). The joy of the DX is that it actually pulls off both on-screen forms: the five first lock together into the hefty Tank Mode known as the "Dino Tanker," and that same assembly then rises up into the humanoid Battle Mode — the classic Megazord that wields the legendary Power Sword. That transformation, achieved without swapping any parts, is a big part of what made the toy so beloved.
For collectors, the vintage DX is all about substance: a genuine die-cast metal content and a chrome-plated Power Sword give the figure real heft and that unmistakable early-'90s sense of quality — so much so that later reissues like the Legacy line were deliberately modeled "like 1992's." Between Bandai Japan (1992) and Bandai America (1993) the robot itself is essentially identical; the differences live in the details, chiefly the stickers and the MMPR (rather than Zyuranger) logos on an otherwise near-identical box.
One last reason this piece is so treasured: it's the foundation of an entire system. Combine the Dino Megazord with the Dragonzord and you get the Mega Dragonzord; add Titanus on top of that and the whole thing grows into the mighty Ultrazord. The DX Daizyuzin isn't just the nostalgic first — it's the base that everything else is built on.
