Description
Daimugen is the largest and final Mythical Chi Beast to appear in Gosei Sentai Dairanger, entering the story only from episode 31 as the show's ultimate heavy hitter. In its base form it is a colossal tortoise modeled on Genbu (Chinese Xuanwu), the Black Tortoise of the North from Chinese mythology. It first hides in the guise of a tiny turtle named „Kameo" before resuming its true, mountain-sized shape to serve the Dairangers as their carrier and support mecha.
Daimugen has two modes: the tortoise carrier form and the upright warrior form, „Super Mythical Chi Warrior Daimugen." Its shell is armored thickly enough to briefly withstand even the divine Daijinryuu, and in battle it fires a pair of side-mounted cannons. Above all, it re-energizes an exhausted Ryuseioh. Its ultimate role is as the foundation of the „Seven-Star Fusion," in which all of the Mythical Chi Beasts combine on and within it to form the massive fortress Jūkō Kiden („Heavy-Armored Chi Palace") — the single most powerful weapon in the entire series.
There is a special treat for Western collectors: unlike the Dairanger team itself, Daimugen actually was adapted into Power Rangers. In Mighty Morphin Season 2 it appears as „Tor the Shuttlezord" (also Tor the Carrierzord) — a turtle carrier zord that rises into a „Warrior Mode" and hauls both the Thunder Megazord and the White Tigerzord on its back. It is one of the few Dairanger mecha that made it into the US series via the specially shot „Zyu2" footage.
The centerpiece of any vintage collection is Bandai Japan's DX Daimugen (1993): a commanding piece of roughly 45 cm in ABS with metal/die-cast content that folds from tortoise to warrior. Its hollow shell body can store the smaller Ryuseioh and Won Tiger mecha inside — a true playset showpiece. In the US it was released as „Tor the Shuttlezord" in Bandai America's Mighty Morphin line. Modern collectors reach for the Bandai Spirits kit from the Shokugan Modeling Project (SMP) line, which recreates the full tortoise-to-robot transformation and combines with the other SMP Dairanger kits.
