Description
The Muteki Shogun (無敵将軍, "Invincible Shogun") is the first major combining robo of Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (1994), and Western collectors will know it best as the Shogun Megazord from Power Rangers: Mighty Morphin Season 3. It is formed by the "Ninja Fusion" (忍者合体, Ninja Gattai) of the five Beast Generals (獣将, Jūshō), and within Kakuranger's creed of heart, technique and body (心技体) it represents the "body" — sheer, unshakeable martial power.
The giant is assembled from five animal-themed warriors: Red Saruder (monkey, Sasuke/NinjaRed) forms the torso and head, with the helmet classically stowed inside the chest; White Kark (crane, Tsuruhime/NinjaWhite) becomes the left arm; Blue Logan (wolf, Saizou/NinjaBlue) the right arm; while Yellow Kumard (bear, Seikai/NinjaYellow) and Black Gammer (frog/toad, Jiraiya/NinjaBlack) make up the legs. The Muteki Shogun wields the mighty Flaming Shogun Sword (火炎将軍剣, Kaen Shōgun Ken), whose finisher — the Blazing Shogun Wave (火炎将軍波, Kaen Shōgun Nami) — can fell nearly any Yokai in a single stroke. Via "Super Ninja Fusion" it docks with the winged Tsubasamaru (the Falconzord in Power Rangers) to become the Super Muteki Shogun (Super Shogun Megazord), unleashing a punishing barrage of cannon fire.
The original DX toy — "Ninja Gattai DX Muteki Shogun" — was released by Bandai Japan in 1994 and is a true heavyweight of the Chogokin die-cast era: each of the five Beast Generals is a standalone figure around 18 cm tall, comes with its own weapon (Red Saruder's "Saruder Slicer" throwing star is a standout) and can be played with individually before combining into the robo. The flaming shogun sword is molded in hard chrome plastic, rounded out by clean paint applications and stickers for the combined mode.
In 1995 Bandai reissued the tooling internationally and for the US market as the Deluxe Shogun Megazord, with the familiar tweaks to match the Power Rangers version: White Kark became the Pink Shogunzord (for Kimberly/Kat), the blues and yellows of Blue Logan and Yellow Kumard were shifted to match Billy's and Aisha's suits, the Japanese kanji on Red Saruder's chest was swapped for a lightning bolt, and the fish decals on the combined mode's shoulders gave way to the iconic MMPR lightning emblem. That dual history is exactly the appeal for collectors: the same die-cast slab, once a Japanese shogun, once an American megazord.
