Description
Gunmazin is a true oddity in the Ohranger universe: not a conventional combining robo, but a standalone Extra Hero and ancient god of war dating back to the primordial supercontinent of Pangaea. He first appears in Episode 37, "I Am Gunmazin," where he lies dormant in the shape of a massive, tiki-like idol statue. Whoever holds his key and recites the magic words "Gunma Gunma Don-doko Gunma" awakens the colossus and becomes his master — at which point Gunmazin grows from the small idol figure into a towering warrior giant.
What sets Gunmazin apart is his utterly neutral, genie-like nature: he fights neither inherently for the Ohrangers nor for the Machine Empire Baranoia, caring only about granting wishes — and doing so under strict, unbending rules. Once a wish is made, he cannot grant another until it is fulfilled; a wish cannot be revoked even if the master regrets it, and Gunmazin only abandons a task if a new key-holder claims him. In battle he wields the Mazin Saber and its "Majin Ikken" single-sword fencing style. His unpredictable, short-tempered personality has made him a lasting fan favorite and a genuine cult mecha in Sentai history.
In the US adaptation Power Rangers Zeo, the war god became "Auric the Conqueror," a "peaceful conqueror" — an ancient tiki that had lain dormant for years on the tropical Mysterio Island (voiced by Derek Stephen Prince). He too is awakened by a key, within the storyline surrounding Tanya; at first Prince Sprocket tricks him into turning on the Rangers, until Tommy explains their connection to Zordon and Auric becomes an ally.
As a DX toy, the "DX Gunmazin" was released by Bandai Japan in 1995. True to the show, it first rests as a closed tiki statue and then unfolds via a key/transformation mechanism into the upright warrior form — complete with the Mazin Saber as a sidearm. Among collectors the figure is notorious for its considerable weight and heavy die-cast (chogokin) content, and it's regarded as one of the chunkiest DX pieces in the Ohranger line. In the US, Bandai America issued the design in the Zeo toy line as "Auric the Conqueror." An unusual, unmistakable piece that no serious Ohranger/Zeo collection should be without.
