Description

The Red Puncher (レッドパンチャー) is the U.A.O.H.'s first Choriki combat robot, effectively the predecessor of Ohranger Robo. Unlike the five machines that merge to form Ohranger Robo, the Red Puncher is a standalone solo mecha piloted single-handedly by OhRed (Goro Hoshino). Summoned with the command "Red Puncher, come!", it is launched into battle straight from U.A.O.H. headquarters by a purpose-built cannon — a dramatic entrance that instantly sets it apart from the rest of the Ohranger fleet.

Its signature is the close-quarters brawling that gives it its name: both arms fire off a rapid-fire barrage of gatling punches, backed up by the two heavy shoulder cannons. The Red Puncher truly comes into its own alongside Ohranger Robo, however — on the command "Super-Assault Combination!" the two merge into the hulking Buster Ohranger Robo, with the Red Puncher's head sliding over Ohranger Robo's as the "Buster Head." As Buster Ohranger Robo, the giant unleashes its Big Cannon Burst finisher from its twin cannons.

In Power Rangers Zeo, the Red Puncher supplied the footage for the Red Battlezord — a special case in its own right: Billy modified Tommy's Zeonizer crystal with Aquitian technology so the Zord was controlled almost entirely by Tommy's brainwaves and biorhythms through a psychic uplink. Only with a calm, clear mind could Tommy trigger the combination with the Zeo Megazord into the Zeo Mega Battlezord, in which the arms become shoulder cannons and the head becomes an alternate helmet.

The DX toy launched in 1995 from Bandai in Japan as the DX Red Puncher and again, identically, in 1996 as the Deluxe Red Battlezord from Bandai America — the two releases are one and the same mold. Its centerpiece is a battery-powered motor (battery compartment in the thighs): a switch on the chest drives the arms back and forth in two speeds to mimic the "gatling punch." Two pegs on the head and extendable telescoping legs let it dock onto the DX Ohranger Robo to form Buster Ohranger Robo, or onto the Zeo Megazord for the Zeo Mega Battlezord. Its own articulation is deliberately spartan (essentially just the ratcheting shoulders) — the whole appeal rests on that motorized punching action, which keeps the Red Puncher a sought-after collector's piece to this day.
