Description
RV Robo is the main mecha of Gekisou Sentai Carranger (1996) — arguably the most self-aware, comedic Sentai ever made, in which the employees of a car dealership become the Rangers. The giant robot is created through the "Gekisou Gattai" (Racing Fusion) of five vehicle-constellation mecha: Red Vehicle (a sports car), Blue Vehicle (a 4x4), Green Vehicle (a minivan), Yellow Vehicle (an SUV) and Pink Vehicle (a compact car). Each of the five Carrangers pilots their own car-mecha, and on command the machines lock together into RV Robo. In Power Rangers Turbo this became the Turbo Megazord, formed from the Turbozords Red Lightning, Mountain Blaster, Desert Thunder, Dune Star and Wind Chaser.
As befits a car-themed Sentai, RV Robo's entire fighting style is steeped in motorsport, moving with the momentum and speed of a race car. It wields the RV Sword to perform its finisher — the "Violent Dash Cut," in which it charges the enemy and cuts it down with a spinning slash (known in Power Rangers as the "Turbo Megazord Spinout").
The DX toy, "Gekisou Gattai DX RV Robo," was released by Bandai Japan in 1996 and is a classic Gattai set of its era: the five individual car vehicles physically combine — each forming an arm, a leg or the torso — and include die-cast metal parts that give the finished robot a satisfying heft and stability. In the US, Bandai America released the same mold as the "Turbo Megazord"; apart from packaging and branding, it is the same toy. RV Robo is a favorite among many collectors precisely because the automotive theme makes the transformation so satisfying — five complete cars becoming a single warrior.
Over the course of the series, RV Robo was joined by a second mecha, VRV Robo, giving the Carrangers a twin-robot arsenal. A modern descendant now exists in the SMP / Super Mini-Pla model-kit version, which reinterprets the classic DX combination mechanism with far greater articulation — a nice contrast to the sturdy, playful original DX.
