Description
The Time Robo is the main mecha of Mirai Sentai Timeranger (2000), known in Power Rangers Time Force as the Time Force Megazord. It is the Time Protection Bureau's emergency weapon against enlarged Londerz Prisoners, formed from five individual TimeJets (Jets 1 to 5) that assemble on the command "3D Formation" (or "Change Formation"). Unlike most Sentai robots, however, the Time Robo is not limited to a single combination.
Its signature feature is exactly this three-dimensional formation system: the TimeJets build three completely different battle forms, switched mid-fight while airborne. Time Robo Alpha (Time Force's "Mode Red") is the heavy close-combat form with full ground power, armed with the Chrono Shield and the Space-Time Sword, whose "Press Blizzard" finisher does not destroy foes but shrinks and freezes them for recapture. Time Robo Beta ("Mode Blue") swaps the jets' arms and legs into a fast, flight-capable version wielding the Flyer Magnum to out-maneuver opponents. And Time Jet Gamma remains a huge, agile fighter jet built for long-range combat, whipping up whirlwinds with its "Gamma Tornado."
Fittingly, the original Bandai (Japan, 2000) DX toy carries the name "3D Formation DX Time Robo": it recreates all three forms from the five TimeJets — for Alpha, Jet 1 becomes the torso, Jets 2/3 the legs and Jets 4/5 the arms; for Beta, 2/3 become the arms and 4/5 the legs. This triple reconfiguration was an unusually ambitious gimmick for a DX set of its era. In the US the same toy was released through Bandai America as the "Time Force Megazord," with recolored deco and the Mode Blue / Mode Red designations.
A special treat for collectors: the Time Robo can additionally combine with the separate Time Shadow mecha (the Shadow combination in Time Force), extending the show's formation principle even further. For the franchise's 25th anniversary Bandai also added the mecha to its SMP (Shokugan Modeling Project) line, which deliberately preserves the original DX classic's three-form transformation mechanism — a fitting testament to just how iconic this "3D Formation" concept remains.
