Description
Animus is arguably the most mystical mecha of the entire Wild Force / Gaoranger era – not a human-piloted battle robot but a fully sentient, talking deity. In the Japanese source series Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger he is GaoGod, the "Wild God" and ancestral father of every Power Animal. Roughly 1,000 years before the show he fought side by side with Shirogane/GaoSilver and the ancient Gaorangers against the Org. Power Rangers Wild Force reframes him as the direct ancestor of the Wild Force Megazord: an ancient colossus twice destroyed by Master Org – once 3,000 years ago and again in modern-day Turtle Cove – who reappears reincarnated as the mysterious child "Kite" to test whether the Rangers are worthy of their Zords.
Unlike GaoKing / the Wild Force Megazord, Animus answers to no pilot – he acts as the independent guardian of the Animarium and its Power Animals. He is formed from five God Power Animals: GaoLeon (the gunmetal-black lion) as the torso, GaoCondor (blue) as the head and bow, GaoSawshark (maroon) as the right arm and arrow, GaoBuffalo (brown) as the hips and legs, and GaoJaguar as the left arm. His signature weapon is the large Power Bow; the finisher "Heaven's Punishment" (dubbed the "Animarian Arrow" in Wild Force) summons the spirits of the ancient beasts, and the Sawshark's saw-bill doubles as a blade.
In toy form Animus debuted in Japan as the DX Chogokin GaoGod (Bandai, December 2001, ¥7,000). Notably, Bandai stated it carries roughly the same amount of die-cast metal as the DX GaoKing – a pleasingly hefty, premium five-piece set whose individual Power Animals can also be displayed separately. In North America, Bandai America released it in 2002 as the Deluxe Animus Megazord (item #10213, around 11 inches / 28 cm tall, out in Fall 2002). The US release is largely identical to the Japanese version apart from packaging and naming; the bow-and-arrow play feature and the blade arm are the same.
For collectors, Animus / GaoGod is a special case: there is no Legacy Collection or Zord Ascension Project reissue – only the original 2001/2002 DX (later joined by an SMP model kit from Bandai Spirits). As a standalone five-animal combination that deliberately sits outside the GaoKing combination chain, he is one of the most sought-after and hardest-to-find figures in the line – the gilded, god-like sculpt and the substantial die-cast content make him a genuine centrepiece for any Gaoranger / Wild Force display.
