Description
GaoHunter is the Gaoranger's second great battle robot and belongs to GaoSilver alone (the ancient warrior Shirogane). Where GaoKing is the team's combined mecha, GaoHunter is the brooding lone-wolf robo: a Hyakujuu-Gattai (Hundred-Beast Fusion) of the three Power Animals GaoWolf, GaoHammerhead and GaoLigator. The massive GaoLigator forms the lion's share of the torso and legs, while GaoWolf and GaoHammerhead supply the head, arms and shoulders. It is armed with the Crescent Boomerang (from GaoWolf's tail) and the Ligator Blade (formed from the tails of GaoHammerhead and GaoLigator).
What makes GaoHunter special is its split nature. A thousand years ago, Shirogane fused his three Power Animals into GaoHunter to defeat the Ultimate Org Hyakkimaru. He won, but the evil spirit seized his body, turning him into the Highness Duke Org Rouki and corrupting the robot into GaoHunter Evil, its Power Animals twisted into Demon Beasts in the process. Only when Shirogane is freed and fights as GaoSilver, shattering the dark mask, does the mecha reveal its true face and become GaoHunter Justice, the Hunter of Justice; in this form the wolf-like mask head shifts to a nobler, more humanoid visage. Its finishing moves are Heaven-and-Earth Quake: Beast Hurricane and Demon Rush: Revolver Phantom.
The DX toy captures exactly this dual identity and turns it into the set's marquee gimmick. Bandai Japan released the DX GaoHunter set (GaoWolf, GaoHammerhead, GaoLigator) at the end of July 2001 for 6,000 yen. The clever touch: the box shows GaoHunter Justice on the front and GaoHunter Evil on the back, and both configurations can be built from the same set. The Justice side emphasizes the GaoHunter logo, the Evil side the Demon Beast Union emblem. Like the rest of the Gaoranger DX line, it uses the series' sturdy build with firm ratcheting joints.
In the United States the robot arrived in 2002 from Bandai America as the DX Predazord for Power Rangers Wild Force, piloted by Merrick Baliton, the Lunar Wolf Ranger, the American counterpart to GaoSilver. Collectors note that both releases are functionally identical (the same three Power Animals, the same wolf/hammerhead/alligator fusion); the differences lie mainly in packaging, logos and naming. A superb, atmospherically dark companion piece to GaoKing in any Gaoranger collection.
