Description
GaoIcarus (Hyakujuu Gattai GaoIcarus) is the Gaorangers' ultimate airborne battle formation and easily one of the most spectacular mecha combinations in the entire series. Its heart is GaoFalcon, the legendary "Fiery Wings" – the Ultimate Power Animal that grants the team its enormous wings and a majestic wingspan. Unlike the ground-based, lion-led standard robo GaoKing, GaoIcarus is built for air superiority and represents a genuine power-up of the Gaoranger arsenal.
The combination is made up of five Power Animals: GaoFalcon forms the upper torso, head and the huge wings, GaoGiraffe becomes the right arm, GaoDeers the left arm, GaoRhinos makes up the waist and legs (lower torso), and GaoMadillo forms the right foot. The giant is armed with the Gao Spear (from GaoGiraffe) and the Gao CrossHorn antlers (from GaoDeers).
The wings are the real showstopper: they let GaoIcarus fly, or fold forward in Defense Mode ("Ultimate Defense Mode") to serve as a shield. Its most iconic move is the Icarus Bind – panels on the wings slide open to reveal a pair of yellow slit eyes whose flash freezes an Org in place.
As a toy, the DX Hyakuju Gattai GaoIcarus launched from Bandai Japan in December 2001 (¥10,000) as a complete set of GaoFalcon, GaoGiraffe, GaoRhinos, GaoMadillo and GaoDeers, with the sturdy die-cast content typical of the DX line. Bandai America released it in 2002 as the Deluxe Isis Megazord, with the Power Animals carrying their English Wildzord names (Falcon, Giraffe, Deer, Rhino and Armadillo Wildzord). The US Falcon packs three electronic sounds in its tail (Falcon Calling, laser beam and battle call); a button extends the Gao Spear from the giraffe and moves the deer's CrossHorn antlers, GaoMadillo rolls into a ball that the rhino's spring-loaded horn can "kick" across the room, and the wings fold into Ultimate Defense Mode. An absolute grail piece for any Gaoranger/Wild Force collection.
