Description

GaoMuscle is the second major combination from Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (2001, the 25th-anniversary Sentai season), known in Power Rangers Wild Force as the Kongazord. Where GaoKing is the show's graceful swordsman, GaoMuscle is summoned whenever brute force is called for: instead of GaoLion, this formation is led by GaoGorilla. Nicknamed "the Muscular Warrior," the colossus debuts when the Gaorangers travel back in time to recruit GaoGorilla as a stand-in for the ailing Red Lion, and the result is a heavyweight melee brawler that would rather crush its foes with bare fists than cut them with a blade.

The build makes that power instantly readable. GaoGorilla forms the head and the massive torso – the true core of the combination. The twin bear Power Animals sit as enormous fists at the arms: GaoBear (black bear) delivering scorching heat and GaoPolar (polar bear) delivering freezing cold, letting GaoMuscle blast fire and ice energy straight from its knuckles. GaoEagle forms the waist and GaoBison the legs. Its arsenal includes the Muscle Anchor (an anchor-and-chain weapon), the Muscle Crackers shoulder cannons and the Bear Hug technique, while its finishers are the Muscle Lariat, a flurry of energized punches, and the Bear Strike, which fires energy blasts from the bears' mouths.

The DX toy launched in 2001 from Bandai Japan as "Hyakujuu Gattai DX GaoMuscle" (MSRP 7,500 yen). Its three new Power Animals – GaoGorilla plus the bear duo GaoBear and GaoPolar – plug together with GaoEagle and GaoBison from the GaoKing set to form GaoMuscle, in the modular "mix-and-match" spirit that defines the whole Gaoranger line, where every animal freely recombines. Like the rest of the DX Gaoranger range, Bandai uses die-cast metal parts for satisfying heft and quality. In the U.S., Bandai America released the set in 2002 as the "Deluxe Kongazord" – the same engineering under Wild Force branding with adjusted deco.

True to Gaoranger form, GaoMuscle is only the starting point of an entire combination family: add GaoRhinos and GaoMadillo for the soccer-kicking powerhouse GaoMuscle Striker, throw in GaoDeer for GaoMuscle Striker Cross Horn, and bring in the wallabies for GaoMuscle Magnum. For collectors who can't track down the vintage DX, there's a modern reissue too: Bandai's Shokugan Modeling Project (SMP, formerly Super Minipla) re-released GaoMuscle in 2021 as a high-grade model kit bundled with GaoRhinos and GaoMadillo – complete with the customary piece of Ramune candy.
