Description
Tenkuujin (天空神, "Heaven-Sky God") is the personal Shinobi Machine of Shurikenger, the mysterious green wildcard warrior of the Hurricaneger. In Power Rangers Ninja Storm he is the Samurai Star Megazord, piloted by Cam Watanabe, the Green Samurai Ranger. Unlike Senpuujin or Gouraijin, which assemble from several machines, Tenkuujin is a solo mecha: on Shurikenger's command he shifts seamlessly via "Hisho Henkei" (Soaring Transformation) from a swallow-shaped high-speed helicopter into a humanoid robot.
As a swallow-and-chopper hybrid, Tenkuujin is lightning fast, fires laser blasts, and hovers on thrusters beneath his feet. In robot mode he fights with blades on both forearms and can detach his rotor blade to wield it as a melee weapon or hurl it like a giant shuriken. He can also energize and summon Karakuri Balls from his hands, keeping right in step with the show's ninja gimmick-machine theme.
His biggest draw for collectors is cross-compatibility with the rest of the fleet: Tenkuujin docks onto Senpuujin (Tenkuu-Senpuujin), clamps onto Gouraijin (Tenkuu-Gouraijin), and — together with Karakuri Ball Set #4 — even crowns the combined Gourai-Senpuujin to form the mighty Tenrai-Senpuujin. In Ninja Storm this mirrors the Samurai Star docking with the Storm and Thunder Megazords.
The DX toy, "Hisho Henkei DX Tenkuujin," was released in 2002 by Bandai Japan and performs the helicopter-to-robot change in one smooth motion with no parts-swapping — true to the solidly built Japanese DX line with its die-cast content. Thanks to standardized connectors it plugs into DX Senpuujin, DX Gouraijin and the Karakuri Ball sets for every giant combination above. In the US, Bandai America released the same mold in 2003 as the Samurai Star Megazord (with its "Samurai Star Chopper" flight mode) in the Power Rangers Ninja Storm line.
