Description

The Sword Slasher is Karakuri Ball No. 1 (からくりボール) from Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger and the standard weapon of the combined mecha Senpuujin. The Karakuri Balls are a whole line of spherical "Variable Attack Units" that the Hurricanegers and their allies summon using Shinobi Medals (coin-like medals): slot a medal into one of the Karakuri Giants and the robot materializes the matching ball, launching it from its chest onto the field, where it snaps open into a weapon or an auxiliary mecha.

The Sword Slasher unfolds into a powerful, dragon-themed blade. To call it, the three Hurricanegers fuse the Shinobi Medals on their Hurricane Gyros. Its signature attack is the Bunshin Maboroshi Giri (分身幻斬り, "Copy Illusion Slash"): Senpuujin creates two illusory duplicates of itself — one for each Hurricaneger — charges the blade tip with yellow energy, and carves the enemy apart with three successive slashes (horizontal, upward, then downward). Kabuto Raiger could also wield the Sword Slasher via his own medal (鉾, "halberd"), and in the crossover Abaranger vs. Hurricaneger their combined powers produced a golden version, the Mahoro Slasher, swung by AbarenOh.

As a DX toy, Bandai Japan realized the Karakuri Balls in charming fashion: small, capsule-styled spheres (a deliberate gashapon look) that pop open via a hinged gimmick into their weapon form. The Sword Slasher was a core accessory to the DX Senpuujin — the ball clips onto the robot's hand and lets you recreate the show's signature weapon-swap right on your shelf. Much of the appeal is the collectible nature of the range: numerous numbered balls, each with a different transformation trick.

In Power Rangers Ninja Storm the concept was adapted as "Power Spheres." The Sword Slasher corresponds to Power Sphere No. 1, the Serpent Sword — likewise a collapsible, serpent/dragon-styled blade and the primary weapon of the Storm Megazord (the US counterpart to Senpuujin, built from hawk, lion, and dolphin), and occasionally used by the Thunder Megazord as well. Here its finisher is called the Triple Strike. Bandai America released the Power Spheres alongside the Storm Megazord toy, so the balls can be drawn from the Megazord's chest and deployed there too.
