Description
Karakuri Ball 10 - Spin Bee is part of the numbered Karakuri Ball line, the wonderfully unusual weapon-mecha system of Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger. Instead of fixed add-on weapons, the Hurricangers hide their arsenal inside compact spheres: a coin-shaped Shinobi Medal summons a Karakuri Giant, the robot launches a ball from its chest pod, and the shell splits open to reveal a small weapon-mecha within. Spin Bee is the bee-and-spinning-top combo numbered ten, and it serves as the personal primary weapon of Karakuri Giant Tenkuujin, the flying mecha of the sixth warrior Shurikenger. It debuted in episode 22, alongside Tenkuujin's own first appearance.
Thematically, Spin Bee is a delightfully odd concept: a stylized bee that is also a spinning top. For its Violent Top attack, Tenkuujin sets Spin Bee whirling and hurls it into the enemy like a miniature tornado, driven by a real ripcord pull. Like all Karakuri Balls, Spin Bee is flexible and can be mounted in the chest pod of Senpuujin, Gouraijin and Tenkuujin alike; the spheres themselves are carried and fired by the Super Karakuri Giant Revolver Mammoth, the Hurricangers' walking weapons arsenal. In the Western adaptation Power Rangers Ninja Storm the same design appears as the Bee Spinner Power Sphere, wielded there by the Samurai Star Megazord.
As a DX toy from Bandai Japan, Spin Bee is a lovely gimmick piece: the bee-top unfolds out of its opening Karakuri Ball shell and can genuinely be launched as a spinning top via an included ripcord, exactly mirroring the on-screen Violent Top attack. Spin Bee was released both as an accessory bundled with the DX Tenkuujin and separately in the smaller candy-toy Karakuri Ball Series (Series 05, paired with the Kabuto Spear). For collectors it's a charming supporting-cast piece that captures the playful mechanical madness of Hurricaneger perfectly: not merely a weapon, but a tiny mecha with real play value of its own.
