Description

The Kabuto Spear is Karakuri Ball No. 11 from Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger (whose footage was adapted in the US as Power Rangers Ninja Storm). The Karakuri Balls are large, numbered spheres summoned via Shinobi Medals, each containing a weapon for the Karakuri Giants to wield. They resemble the capsules dispensed by a gashapon machine and are deployed throughout the series in ever-changing combinations; the Kabuto Spear is the line's lance-type entry.

On screen, the Kabuto Spear serves as KabutoRaiger's weapon. Its finisher is the Crash Lance Stab (突貫香車突き, Tokkan Kyōsha Zuki): a spear of energy erupts from the blade-like tail plate to skewer the enemy, the name playfully nodding to the charging lance (kyōsha) piece from shogi. Loaded into Revolver Mammoth instead, the spear can also be brought to bear by KuwagaRaiger — a neat example of the modular, swappable nature of the Hurricaneger arsenal. The design blends the silhouette of a beetle horn with the razor-edged tail spike of a horseshoe crab.

As a DX toy, the Kabuto Spear was released by Bandai Japan in September 2002 as part of the Karakuri Ball Series 05 set alongside the Spin Bee (No. 10), complete with their matching Shinobi Medals. Molded mostly in ABS, the spear packs a clever gimmick: a magnet set into its underside lets it cling to any magnetic surface. Like every Karakuri Ball, it slots into the chest pods of the big DX robots — DX Senpuujin, DX Gouraijin and DX Tenkuujin (each sold separately) — to re-arm the mechas with fresh weaponry. Being a Japan-only release, and with the US Ninja Storm line never offering these weapon balls at retail, the Kabuto Spear makes for a charming import find for Western collectors.
