Description
Catch Spider is the twelfth entry in the Karakuri Ball series (からくり玉) from Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger – that toybox of palm-sized spheres that pop open to release a small weapon-mecha inside. In the show, Catch Spider is wielded by Shurikenger, the mysterious green ally of the Hurricanegers. Like the other Karakuri Balls, the sphere is launched from the chest of one of the giant Karakuri Giants (Senpuujin, Gouraijin, Tenkuujin), springs open, and unfolds its insect tool.
As the name suggests, Catch Spider is a spider-shaped mecha; its theme kanji 糸 (thread/silk) points to this piece's specialty – it catches and binds. In combat it serves as a grappling-and-catch tool: the spider is fired out on a line, hooks the enemy, and reels them in or holds them fast. That makes Catch Spider one of the support weapons that give a pilot grip and reach rather than raw striking power.
In the U.S. adaptation Power Rangers Ninja Storm, the same mecha appears as Power Sphere 12 "Spider." There, too, it is described as a launchable grappling hook and assigned to the Samurai Star Megazord of the Green Samurai Ranger, Cam – so the green extra member remains the user in the West as well. The Power Spheres work exactly like the Karakuri Balls: fired from the Megazord's chest, they open up into add-on weapons.
As a DX toy, Catch Spider was released by Bandai Japan as part of the Karakuri Ball line – small figures that fold out from ball form into their mecha shape. Catch Spider shipped in a set together with Pitatto Hitode (Karakuri Ball 14). This accessory tier is a particular draw for collectors: tiny, cleverly engineered folding mechanisms that, alongside Senpuujin and company, round out the complete Hurricaneger arsenal.
