Description
The Karakuri Balls are the heart of the weapon system in Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger. When the Hurricanegers insert their coin-shaped Shinobi Medals into one of the Karakuri Giants (Senpujin, Gouraijin, Tenkujin), the robot launches a large ball from its chest that pops open to reveal a small weapon-mecha inside. Karakuri Ball No. 14, Pitatto Hitode, is the starfish weapon of Hurricane Blue (Nanami). The name pairs "pitatto" (sticking/clinging) with "hitode" (starfish); its associated kanji 着 ("to attach, to adhere") sums up its specialty perfectly.
In battle, Pitatto Hitode locks onto Senpujin's left knee to enable the Starlight Knee Drop — a falling knee strike with all five starfish arms pointing forward. Its most spectacular ability, though, is the Star Dust Cracker: the thrown starfish multiplies into a whole swarm of multicolored starfish that stick to the enemy's body and then detonate. A delightfully playful "gimmick" weapon of the Hurricaneger era that blends utility with pure spectacle.
As a toy, Pitatto Hitode appeared in Bandai's Japanese Karakuri Ball line: small spheres that split open to reveal the mini weapon-mecha inside, just like in the show. They were sold in sets, with Pitatto Hitode released in Karakuri Ball Set 06 alongside Catch Spider. The balls dock onto the DX Karakuri Giants to expand their arsenal. Power Rangers Ninja Storm's US merchandise focused mainly on the big combining robots, which makes the complete Japanese Karakuri Ball sets a special treat for collectors and importers.
