Description
Karakuri Ball 15 "Tri Tsuno" is one of three sphere-mechanisms from the Tri-Condor set of Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger (adapted in the US as Power Rangers Ninja Storm). Karakuri Balls are small, spherical Shinobi machines: when a Shinobi Medal (忍びメダル) is inserted into the cockpit of the giant robots – Senpuujin, Gouraijin or Tenkuujin – the internal Karakuri System produces the corresponding ball and launches it from the chest. Ball 15 belongs to Shurikenger, and its Shinobi Medal bears the character 角 (Tsuno = horn), which is exactly where the ball gets its name.
Together with Karakuri Ball 16 "Tri Kanmuri" (冠 / crown, used by HurricaneRed) and Karakuri Ball 17 "Tri Tsume" (爪 / claw, used by KabutoRaiger), Tri Tsuno unfolds into the bird-shaped Karakuri Giant Tri-Condor. Within that formation, Tri Tsuno forms the condor's tail feathers. When the Tri-Condor is then mounted as armor onto Senpuujin, it creates the powered-up battle form Tenrai Senpuujin (天雷旋風神) – and Tri Tsuno becomes the distinctive horned crest atop the robot's helmet. That "horn" is the little sphere's playful gimmick and the source of its name.
As a DX toy, Tri Tsuno was not sold on its own but as part of Bandai's (Japan) "Karakuri Ball Series 04 – Tri-Condor," released in September 2002. The ABS set contains all three balls (15, 16 and 17) plus the three matching Shinobi Medals (Tsuno/horn, Kanmuri/crown, Tsume/claw). The bird-like Tri-Condor converts into head and hand parts for the combined Tenrai Senpuujin robot, and the set docks on as a chest-mounted weapon system for the separately sold DX robots. A neat, compact collector's piece – as one of the trio, Tri Tsuno is technically a single component, but it really shines when paired with the rest of the Tri-Condor set.
