Description
The Karakuri Balls (からくり玉) are the weapon arsenal of the Karakuri Giants from Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger. When a pilot slots the coin-like Shinobi Medals into the cockpit, the robot – Senpuujin first and foremost – launches a spherical capsule from its chest that splits open to reveal a small weapon-mecha inside. Karakuri Ball No. 03, the Tortoise Hammer (亀ハンマー / Kame Hammer), carries a tortoise motif and unfolds into a heavy war-hammer on a retractable chain – essentially a ball-and-chain flail that the giant can swing in wide arcs.
First appearing in Episode 4, the Tortoise Hammer is treated as Hurricane Blue's specialty. Senpuujin whirls it around on its chain like a morning star for powerful close-range strikes. Its show-stopping moment, though, is the combination with the Goat Crusher (modeled after a kendama skill toy): in the finisher "Goat Hammer Hurricane Comet," Senpuujin bounces the Tortoise Hammer off the Goat Crusher to build up momentum, then hurls the ball into the enemy like a comet. Like all Karakuri Balls, the hammer can be summoned not only by Senpuujin but also by Gouraijin and Tenkuujin.
In Power Rangers Ninja Storm the Karakuri Balls are renamed "Power Spheres." The Tortoise Hammer's counterpart there is the Turtle Mace, which lets the Storm Megazord knock foes down with a single swing and drives its point into the monster's chest for the kill. Fittingly, the Japanese Goat Crusher becomes the Ram Hammer in the US version – so the goat/ram duo stays a well-rehearsed team on both sides of the Pacific.
As a toy, Bandai Japan sold the Karakuri Balls as accessories built around the DX robots: the closed spheres slot into the chest bays of DX Senpuujin, DX Gouraijin and DX Tenkuujin and pop open there, so the ball-to-weapon transformation can be acted out right on the robot. These are pure plastic gimmicks (no die-cast – that lives in the DX Chogokin Senpuujin itself), but they win you over with clever fold-out mechanics. In the US, Bandai America released the equivalent as a "Power Sphere" (Turtle Mace) within the Ninja Storm lineup. Collector's note: loose original Karakuri Balls are sought-after today and often turn up bundled with the DX Senpuujin.
