Description

Gatling Leo is the fifth of the Karakuri Balls (Karakuri Kyodaikyu), the auxiliary weapon-mecha arsenal of the Hurricanegers. Its design is a blocky white lion whose mane hides the spinning barrels of a gatling gun – a motif that ties it firmly to Hurricane Yellow (Kouta Bito), the lion-themed Yellow of the team. Like all Karakuri Balls, Gatling Leo is activated with the coin-shaped Shinobi Medals: the main robot launches a compact ball from its chest hatch, which springs open to release the folded-up weapon mecha inside – one of the most charming core gimmicks of the entire Hurricaneger mecha line.

Its signature move is the combination "Senpuujin Gatling Leo": the lion mounts onto Senpuujin's arm as a rotating cannon and hoses the enemy down with a barrage of fire, the finisher aptly named "Big Rotation Lion Explosive Bullet." True to the show's modular building-block system, Gatling Leo isn't locked to Senpuujin either – it can be cross-combined with other Karakuri Balls, producing special forms such as "Gatling Leo Squid Attacker" in episode 22. In the US adaptation Power Rangers Ninja Storm, the entire lion/gatling-cannon imagery is drawn straight from these Bandai designs, and the spinning lion cannon remains one of the most memorable battle images of the Sentai source.

As a toy, Gatling Leo was released in 2002 as part of Bandai Japan's "Karakuri Ball Series." Each set packs the weapon mecha inside a hinged plastic ball; the balls then clip into the chest ports of DX Senpuujin, DX Gouraijin and DX Tenkuujin and can be attached as an arm or add-on weapon. These are compact, largely plastic figures (no die-cast) – the appeal lies in the playable eject-and-dock mechanism that extends the big DX robots. For collectors, completing the full Karakuri Ball run is a rewarding side-quest alongside the main mecha; Gatling Leo is primarily a Bandai Japan release.
