Description

BakurenOh is the great antagonist of the Abaranger mecha lineup – not a hero robot, but the feared battle form of two wild Bakuryuu. It's created by merging CarnoRyutus (based on the predator Carnotaurus) and ChasmoShieldon (based on the horned Chasmosaurus), two malevolent prehistoric beasts that once tried to turn Dino Earth into an eternal frozen wasteland. Fittingly, BakurenOh sports a chilly ice motif throughout and comes across as a dark, colder twin of the heroic AbarenOh.

Its big moment is the summer feature film "Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger DELUXE: Abare Summer is Freezing Cold!" (2003). In it, the two Bakuryuu had long been sealed away by Princess Freezia using her Baku Laser weapon; the dimensional drifter Galvidi impersonates Freezia and manipulates the Abarangers into repairing the Baku Laser – only so he can tame BakurenOh and wield it himself. The icy colossus is ultimately defeated when AbarenOh reinforces itself with the Bakuryuu TopGaler and StegoSlidon. The TV series later revisits the idea as well: Dezumozorlya covets BakurenOh as a powerful new body.

As a toy, Bandai (Japan) released the "DX Bakuryuu Gattai BakurenOh" in 2003 as a movie tie-in. Engineering-wise it builds on the proven AbarenOh chassis – at its core BakurenOh is an ice-colored repaint/remodel of that design, with CarnoRyutus and ChasmoShieldon as the combinable individual Bakuryuu. The set also included matching Dino faceplates (head/face pieces) for CarnoRyutus and ChasmoShieldon that clip onto the DX Dino Brace (the transformation-bracelet toy) – a nice bonus gimmick for the role-play crowd.

For collectors, BakurenOh is a genuine curiosity: while Power Rangers Dino Thunder never adapted the Abaranger movie itself, the CarnoRyutus/ChasmoShieldon mecha still reached the US – via the TV series as the evil Replicantzord and as the Bandai America toy "Blizzard Force Megazord" (2004), in a different colorway and bundled with the toyline-exclusive Arctic Pterazord. Only the specific Japanese DX BakurenOh in its icy movie deco remained Japan-exclusive – a must-have for anyone chasing the complete set of Abaranger villain mecha and movie editions.
