Description
AbarenOh is the main mecha of "Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger" (2003) and served as the basis for the Thundersaurus Megazord in "Power Rangers Dino Thunder." It is formed by the union of three Bakuryuu ("Explosion Dragons") — and here lies the show's defining twist: the Bakuryuu are not built machines but living, sentient creatures from the parallel world of Dino Earth who fight alongside the Abarangers as partners. The core trio consists of Bakuryuu Tyrannosaurus (AbareRed / Ryouga), Bakuryuu Triceratops (AbareBlue / Yukito) and Bakuryuu Pteranodon (AbareYellow / Ranru).
Combined, AbarenOh is a heavy, prehistoric brawler. Its signature is the arm-mounted Tyranno Drill, used for the finisher "Bakuryu Blitz Drill Spin" — AbarenOh leaps skyward, spins up the drill and dives to pierce the Giganoid on impact. Its arsenal also includes the fiery "Bakuryu Fire" breath from the Tyrannosaurus' jaws, the "Tricera Punch" delivered with the Triceratops head, and the "Double-Tail Sword."
The true heart of Abaranger, though, is the "Bakuryuu Gattai" system: AbarenOh can detach its limbs and swap in other Bakuryuu, yielding a huge range of super-combinations. It rides atop Bakuryuu Stegosraidon as AbarenOh Sraidon, trades arms for Dimenokodon (AbarenOh Nokodon) or Parasarokkiru (AbarenOh Rokkiru), and can be built up through add-on sets all the way to BakurenOh and further forms — a mix-and-match construction kit that, while typical of Sentai, is rarely this thoroughly realized.
As a DX toy, "DX Bakuryuu Gattai AbarenOh" was released in 2003 by Bandai (Japan). The three Bakuryuu are played with individually and click together into the robot; true to Bandai form, it includes die-cast content for heft and stability. A battery-powered motor inside the Tyrannosaurus drives the arm drill when combined. The whole play value revolves around the modular system: separately sold Bakuryuu plug in and swap out at will. Beyond the standard release there were color variants (the green "Another Version" and a black-and-white "Black Version"). In the US, Bandai America issued the figure as the "Deluxe Thundersaurus Megazord" for the Dino Thunder line.
