The base of this variant is the Drive Max Megazord — known in Japan as DaiBouken, the central combining robo of GoGo Sentai Boukenger (adapted in the West as Power Rangers Operation Overdrive). It is formed by the GoGo Combination of the five GoGo Vehicles (GoGo Dump, GoGo Formula, GoGo Gyro, GoGo Dozer and GoGo Marine) and serves as the team's main mecha. By docking additional GoGo Vehicles it grows into the hulking Super DaiBouken and finally into its largest configuration, the Ultimate DaiBouken.

The Black Edition is a limited black-and-gold recolor from Bandai Japan. In place of the colorful standard deco, the robo arrives in deep black with gold accents — a look that turns the already hefty, die-cast-laden DX figure into a genuine showcase piece. Its articulation and gimmicks match the regular DX mold; in this version the combination scales all the way up to the Black & Gold Ultimate DaiBouken.

For collectors the Black Edition is a special catch: the engineering and transformation are identical to the retail release, but the dark premium finish and its limited availability make it noticeably rarer and more sought-after than the colorful original. In the West the black robo occasionally surfaced under the Operation Overdrive banner as the "Drive Max Megazord Black" — a must-have for anyone who already owns DaiBouken and wants the centerpiece of the display case.
