Description
GoGo Gattai DaiTanken is the Boukengers' second combining robot and appears far less often than the main mecha DaiBouken. Assembled in the "Bouken Formation 2," it is built from GoGo Vehicles 6 through 10 – GoGo Drill, GoGo Shovel, GoGo Mixer, GoGo Crane and GoGo Jet. Its debut came in the theatrical feature "GoGo Sentai Boukenger The Movie: The Greatest Precious" before it saw action in the TV series in Tasks 40 and 42. That makes DaiTanken one of those rare "secondary robots" that even devoted collectors tend to overlook – which is exactly what makes it the centerpiece of any complete Boukenger display.
The standout trait: unlike DaiBouken or DaiVoyager, DaiTanken has no shared cockpit. Like SirenBuilder, it is piloted by a single Boukenger, since Vehicles 6 through 10 have no fixed pilot and can be operated by any team member as the situation demands. Structurally, GoGo Jet forms the head, torso and upper legs, while GoGo Drill provides the right arm. Its finisher is the "Bouken Flash," firing a beam of energy from each limb; in the movie it also unleashes the "Big Red Bomber," in which GoGo Jet's cockpit jettisons and bores straight through the target.
The clever part is the modular concept behind it: the same five support vehicles that combine into DaiTanken on their own can instead dock onto DaiBouken. Drill, Shovel, Mixer and Crane turn it into the hulking Super DaiBouken, and adding GoGo Jet creates Ultimate DaiBouken – where GoGo Jet contributes the helmet, wings, back and shield. One and the same vehicle set is therefore either armor for the main robot or a standalone battle machine, a design trick that plays out beautifully in toy form.
For the DX toy, Bandai Japan committed fully to the collector approach: GoGo Vehicles 6 through 10 were sold individually in the DX GoGo Vehicle line, each with die-cast content in the classic DaiBouken system. Snapped together they form DaiTanken, and mounted onto the DX DaiBouken they build Ultimate DaiBouken – so five vehicles yield several robots. This original DaiTanken mold never received a US release. For Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, Bandai America instead released the DualDrive Megazord – not a re-release of the Japanese vehicles but an entirely new mold, sold as a single finished set rather than individual vehicles. The DualDrive could in turn combine with the DriveMax Megazord to form the massive DriveMax Ultrazord.
