Description
Geki Tohja is the first and title-giving main robo of Juken Sentai Gekiranger – better known in Power Rangers Jungle Fury as the Jungle Pride Megazord. It is formed from the three GekiBeasts of the core Gekirangers: GekiTiger (Jan/GekiRed), GekiJaguar (Retsu/GekiBlue) and GekiCheetah (Ran/GekiYellow). In its standard configuration, GekiTiger becomes the head, torso and arms, while GekiCheetah and GekiJaguar form the legs. Unlike a classic mecha, Geki Tohja is a martial-arts robot through and through: it fights in pure Juken style, driven by the synchronized movements of its pilots, which it mirrors one-to-one.
That makes it one of the most unusual Sentai robots ever – it carries no blaster or projectile weapons whatsoever, but is extremely agile and strikes like a kung-fu master. Its weapon is the Gekisetsukon, a three-section staff formed from the tails of the three core GekiBeasts. Its signature finisher spins the upper body like a top and plows through the enemy with a whirlwind barrage of punches – a wonderfully atypical, acrobatic finishing move.
A big part of Geki Tohja's appeal is its swappable armed modes, achieved by docking additional GekiBeasts: GekiElephant turns it into GekiElephanTohja with heavy armor and the flail-like EleHammer; GekiBat becomes GekiBatTohja, whose wings turn into blades and grant flight and gliding; and GekiShark yields GekiSharkTohja with blade-armed close combat and underwater capability. Later the team gains a second main robo in GekiFire (the Jungle Master Megazord), but Geki Tohja remains the heart of the series.
As a DX toy it launched in 2007 from Bandai Japan as "DX Juken Gattai GekiTohja"; Bandai America released it in 2008 as the "Deluxe Jungle Pride Megazord" for the Jungle Fury line. As with the DX combining robos of that era, the three GekiBeasts can be played with individually and clicked together by hand into the complete robot. The add-on beasts GekiElephant, GekiBat and GekiShark were sold separately and upgrade the DX figure into the armed modes above – a modular collector's set that recreates the full team-up fun of the show.
