Description
ShinkenOh is the first and central Samurai Giant (Kyodai-Robo) of "Samurai Sentai Shinkenger" (2009) — in the US adaptation "Power Rangers Samurai / Super Samurai" he is known as the Samurai Megazord. He forms from the combination of the five core Origami, the "folding gods" (折神) of the Shinkenger team, which the warriors control through Mojikara, the power of written kanji. They are the pentagon-shaped Shishi Origami (Lion) of Shinken Red / Takeru Shiba, the hexagonal Ryuu Origami (Dragon) of Shinken Blue, the circular Kame Origami (Turtle) of Shinken Pink, the square Kuma Origami (Bear) of Shinken Green, and the triangular Saru Origami (Monkey) of Shinken Yellow.
The origami gimmick sits at the heart of the design: each Origami is "triple-changing," shifting from a flat, geometric Emblem Mode to an Animal Mode and finally into the combination. During the "Samurai Gattai," the Shishi Origami unfolds into the head and torso while the other four fold into the arms and legs. In battle ShinkenOh wields the great sword DaiShinken and mounts a Hiden Disk on its shoulder as a shield — a neat echo of the show's samurai-and-calligraphy aesthetic.
Bandai Japan's DX "Samurai Gattai ShinkenOh" is a complete boxed set of all five Origami, each switching individually between Emblem and Animal Mode before assembling into the roughly 28 cm ShinkenOh. It ships with the "Shinkenohmet" (helmet), the DaiShinken sword and Hiden Disk 07 bearing the five emblems — any Hiden Disk from the Shinkenger line works as its shield. As is traditional for DX Sentai robos, it packs die-cast metal parts that give the figure a satisfying heft. Bandai America released it as the "Samurai Megazord" with the five FoldingZords (Lion, Dragon, Turtle, Bear, Ape); the US version swaps the Hiden Disks for "Power Discs" and tends to be a touch smaller and more plastic-focused than the Japanese DX.
As befits a Sentai lead mecha, ShinkenOh is only the beginning: it combines with additional support Origami to become KabutoShinkenOh (+ Kabuto/Beetle), KajikiShinkenOh (+ Kajiki/Swordfish) and ToraShinkenOh (+ Tora/Tiger). Shinken Gold's Ebi Origami (Lobster) forms the standalone DaiKaiOh, which merges with ShinkenOh into DaiKai-ShinkenOh; the Kabuto, Kajiki and Tora Origami together build the flying DaiTenku, upgrading ShinkenOh into the flight-capable TenkuShinkenOh. A cornerstone of any Shinkenger collection.
