Description

Secret Lantern Daigoyou (Japanese: Himitsu Chochin Daigoyou) is arguably the most eccentric support mecha in Samurai Sentai Shinkenger — a talking, motor-mouthed Origami shaped like a paper lantern. It wasn't built by one of the noble Shinkengers but by Genta Umemori, the self-made Shinken Gold, who cobbles his gear together using his modern, electronic Mojikara rather than inheriting it. The lantern is modeled on the chochin carried by okappiki — the assistant lawmen of the Edo period — on their nighttime arrests, which also gives it its name: „Goyou" was the cry those officers shouted when making a collar. In Power Rangers Samurai / Super Samurai the same mecha appears as the LightZord, commanded there by Antonio, the Gold Ranger.

Daigoyou debuts in Act 28 („The Lantern Samurai"): after an Ayakashi swapped Genta's soul into a piece of sushi, he developed a genuine phobia of sushi and could no longer use his Sushi Changer. As a stand-in fighter he brought the lantern from his sushi cart to life — and out came an Origami with plenty of lip and comedic timing, a sidekick who chatters at least as much as it fights. Daigoyou has several modes: a Lantern Mode from which it fires the Secret Disks, a Jitte Mode in which Shinken Gold wields it as the classic okappiki weapon (the jitte truncheon), and a standalone Robot Mode that waddles into battle on stubby little legs.

At the giant scale, though, Daigoyou is above all a shape-shifter within the Origami combination system. Attach the Ryu, Kuma, Saru and Kame Origami to the lantern and write the kanji for „big" (dai), and Daigoyou grows into Shinken Daigoyou — taking over the core-block role normally filled by the Shishi Origami inside Shinkenoh. It also pairs beautifully with Genta's own mecha DaiKaiOh and can be gripped by the combining robots as an oversized jitte. This modularity — now a weapon, now a torso, now its own little fighter — makes it one of the most versatile Origami in the entire series.

For the DX toy, this is the release collectors favor: Bandai's Japanese „DX Daigoyou" (2009) is the show-accurate version. The lantern folds open, features a light-up LED gimmick, and launches its hidden disks at the push of a button; via its attachment points it plugs into Shinkenoh or DaiKaiOh as a jitte and builds up into Shinken Daigoyou with the four limb Origami (you do need to own Shinkenoh / those Origami for the full combination). For the Western market, Bandai America put out a noticeably smaller, simplified LightZord under the Power Rangers Samurai line — which is why many collectors to this day still reach for the larger, more gimmick-rich Japanese DX Daigoyou.
