Description
The Archelon Zord has an unusual origin. In the Japanese series Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger, "Archenolon" existed only as a Zyudenchi (power battery / energy source) and never as an actual on-screen Zyudenryu mecha. It is based on Archelon, a prehistoric giant sea turtle, and is counted among the additional "Guardian" Zyudenryu beyond the Ten Great Zyudenryu. The name is a portmanteau of Archelon and the Japanese "noronoro" (sluggish, slow): the Zyudenchi generates a strong gravity field that slows enemies down — though it frequently hampers the user as well. Archenolon never received a true mecha form or a Bandai Japan DX toy.
For the US adaptation Power Rangers Dino Super Charge (the second story arc of Dino Charge), Bandai America turned the character into a standalone auxiliary Zord — the Archelon Zord — even though it never appeared as a mecha in either series' footage. It is rendered as a large sea turtle with a saw blade concealed in its shell. A hinged mouth lets it attach as an alternate arm to the Dino Charge Megazord (or other megazord combinations); on activation the rear legs/flippers flip outward, and inserting a Dino Charger into the mouth causes the saw blade to slide out along the body, so in combination it serves as a saw-arm or saw-blade launcher.
The DX toy was made by Bandai America in 2016 as part of the Dino Super Charge auxiliary/collector Zord assortment. It is plastic (not die-cast). The single figure is an upscaled version of the smaller Zord bundled in the "#21 Dino Slow Charger" two-pack — the "Slow" tag referencing Archenolon's gravity/slowing ability. One Dino Charger is included to trigger the saw mechanism. Important for collectors: there is no Japanese Bandai DX equivalent. The Archelon Zord is a Power Rangers exclusive and one of the cases where the US line has a mold that the Kyoryuger toyline never produced.
