Description
In the 2014-2015 Japanese Super Sentai series Ressha Sentai ToQger, the Cryner (クライナー, Kurainā; sometimes romanized "Kuliner") is not a hero mecha but the machine of the antagonists, the Shadow Line. The name is a pun blending "cry," the Japanese kurai (暗い, "dark/gloomy") and "liner." These black "Shadow Ressha" (shadow trains) are used by Shadow Line officers to establish Dark Stations (闇駅) that gradually convert cities into Shadow Towns. The configuration modeled here is General Schwarz's personal Cryner Robo. A key note for collectors: ToQger was never adapted into Power Rangers — Saban/Hasbro skipped the season — so no US version of the show and no Power Rangers toy exist. The Cryner Robo is strictly Japan-exclusive.
On screen the Cryner drives as a train (Ressha) and folds into a humanoid Cryner Robo armed with twin forearm-mounted cannons; Schwarz's version adds forearm spikes and a sword. Several Cryners appear across the series — Baron Nero pilots a standard model and Emperor Zet a white "Imperial Cryner" — and three units can merge into the larger Cho-Cryner Robo (超クライナーロボ) with shoulder-mounted cannons.
Bandai (Japan) deliberately kept the Cryner Robo out of the regular mass-market DX line and issued it only as a premium collector piece; it was also the only toy of any Shadow Line vehicle ever produced. It shipped in December 2014 as a Tamashii web / Bandai Premium exclusive under the "Super Sentai Artisan" banner (Chogokin Ressha-combination series, subtitle "Black Iron Change" / 黒鉄変化), priced at 12,960 yen. As a Chogokin product it incorporates die-cast metal parts and transforms from train to robot just like its on-screen counterpart; it depicts the black General Schwarz version and came bundled with bonus parts. Owing to its exclusive status it is considerably rarer than the season's regular hero mecha (ToQ-Oh and the like).
