Description
Otomo Nin Paonmaru is an auxiliary mecha from Shuriken Sentai Ninninger (2015, the 39th Super Sentai series). The "Otomo Nin" (companion ninja) are the animal-shaped support mecha of the Ninninger team, summoned via Nin Shuriken. Paonmaru is the elephant-themed, predominantly green member and the first Otomo Nin to appear in the show; it is born from a purified sealing shuriken the team obtains after defeating the Youkai Tsuchigumo. Its name plays on "pao/paon," the Japanese onomatopoeia for an elephant's trumpeting call. In the US adaptation Power Rangers Ninja Steel / Super Ninja Steel (2017/2018), its counterpart is the Rumble Tusk Zord.
Paonmaru has an animal (elephant) mode and a standalone robot mode, and in the series it functions primarily as a swappable module for the main robot Shurikenjin. In the "Shurikenjin Paon" combination, Paonmaru takes the lead mecha Shinobimaru's place in the cockpit while Shinobimaru becomes the right hand and the Paon Otomo Nin Shuriken replaces the head. This configuration is slower but noticeably more power-oriented than the standard form; fitting the elephant theme, the arm can be extended like a trunk to strike distant enemies with force.
The DX toy was released in March 2015 by Bandai Japan as the first entry in the Otomo Nin line (Otomonin Series 01). It is made mainly of plastic (ABS/PVC) with no significant die-cast content and supports three configurations: animal (elephant) mode, an independent robot mode, and combination with the separately sold DX Shurikenjin (forming Shurikenjin Paon). It includes its own Nin Shuriken (the Paon Shuriken), which interfaces with the collectible-weapon gimmick of the DX Ninja Ichibantou. For the US market, Bandai America reissued the same tooling in 2017 as the "DX Rumble Tusk Megazord," which uses its own Zord Star instead of the Japanese Nin Shuriken. Finer differences between the two versions are left general here rather than overstated.
